I am thinking that I should try to put a video on here of how dyes should be made into a paste and then how I filter them to avoid red speckles. It is going to come up in the Quilt University class that opens January 12th so maybe that would be a good thing to show everyone how to do as there are bound to be questions. I'll start experimenting now so it can be ready.
Until then, here are a few pictures I like. This picture is of red and orange silk hand dyed for a wedding on the beach. The bride is wearing chiffon as an overlay over habotai silk. The groom is in crepe backed silk satin.
This picture is of me several years ago starting to dye a very large wedding chuppah. You can see the end results on my web site. It is orange and white. This thing was a real pain in the back to dye. It weighed a ton and getting it to the rinse stage was a sweat producer.
This is a picture of some shibori cotton. Nothing special except that it's beautiful and fun and now lives in a quilt somewhere in southern California.

What a lovely wedding picture. The fabrics are gorgeous. I like seeing the completed projects for which you have dyed the fabrics. It is inspiring. I get stuck in a rut thinking only of cotton quilt fabrics. There is so much more.
Right! When you start thinking in terms of other fabrics then doors start swinging open. Burlap. Hemp. Silk/hemp combinations. Cotton flannel. Then there are yarns which means knitting and crochet work and on and on we go!
Thanks for commenting!
Hi Marjie,
Glad you're still posting! I've been looking...
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! My husband and I drove up to Maryland's Eastern Shore to see my father and family. The fall colors were wonderful.
The video of you mixing your dyes would be nice to see! I signed up for QP on the first day registration opened. I figured it would fill up quickly! I hope you are taking good care of yourself and not pushing yourself too hard so you will be well.
I haven't done any silk dyeing, but plan to try using Dharma's method. I bought a silk camisole to dye and give as a gift to someone. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Have a great Christmas, and looking forward to QP! In the meantime, I will keep reading your blog.

Marjie - I just discovered your blog - what a fantastic idea!! I am sure there's a good deal of work invoved in keeping it up, but the photos are fantastic - my favorite is the sideways portrait after the camera fell over. Not only will this be a wonderful teaching aid, but it provides a sense of realism and evidence of your fabulous sense of humor.
I've missed checking in onthe DF since your class finished - now I can get a fix here!

Ellen!
Thank you for the nice comments. You're so cute. When the camera fell over it went r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w-l-y and I just went with it and thought..."this is going to be another terrible picture of me" but was amused when I saw it so it stayed.
